  • Office space, broadband program discussed at supervisors meeting

    Dec 4, 2024

A field investigator with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission may soon open shop in the Holt County Courthouse. During the Nov. 27 Holt County supervisors meeting, John Bauer with NGPC requested to use office space, if available. "I need room for a desk, chair and a couple filing cabinets," Bauer said. Supervisor Dustin Breiner asked how soon space would be needed. Bauer replied there's "no rush." Chairman Bill Tielke said once the St. Mary's third-grade students move back to the school, an...

  • Supervisors discuss wheelchair van for Veterans Office

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 4, 2024

Could a wheelchair-accessible van be in the works for use by Antelope County veterans? According to Veterans' Service Officer Tom Nelson, a need definitely exists. "We're still rolling with it," he told Antelope County Supervisors during Tuesday morning's meeting in Neligh. Nelson did not present actual figures for a potential purchase but noted used vans could run approximately $54,000. "Other VSOs are running with an actual van. I'd rather have a wheelchair van. It makes more sense," Nelson...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 4, 2024

Unpopular opinion: Sportsmanship is best shown during competition, not during a five-second sound bite or video during a coin toss. That’s why I agree with the take by Nebraska sports writer Mitch Sherman from Friday’s Huskers versus Iowa game. “The Athletic” journalist asserts that the 60-minute football contest showed true sportsmanship. The pregame antics were pure hype. “They didn’t head hunt. They didn’t try to start fights or commit personal fouls. Common in rivalry games, those actions...

  • Republicans have a lengthy 'wish list' after retaining filibuster-proof majority

    Paul Hammel, Nebraska Statehouse Correspondent|Dec 4, 2024

Everyone has a "wish list" – things they'd like to get done, things they'd like to see happen, things they wish would come true. But the Nebraska Republican Party recently put together the mother of all wish lists. In a four-page document unveiled last month, the Nebraska GOP listed more than 70 policy changes they'd like to see at the state, local and national level. The long list of wishes include returning the state to a "winner-take-all" system of awarding its electoral votes for p...

  • When presses go silent, we all lose

    George Ayoub, Nebraska Examiner|Dec 4, 2024

So goes the school, so goes the newspaper, so goes the town. Such an observation is neither original nor germane to some of America, but in Nebraska it is a fact of life — sometimes a sad fact when a small town loses its newspaper. For further details on two Nebraska newspapers closing their doors, I recommend Paul Hammel’s excellent piece in the Nebraska Examiner. He puts into perspective what the loss of a newspaper means to communities such as Ainsworth and Valentine, the pair set to cea...

  • Finding Fraud

    Chris Bowling, Flatwater Free Press|Dec 4, 2024

The envelope didn't surprise Dru McMillan. But when she opened the letter and read the number, she felt sick. "If you agree with the determination, please submit a draft in the amount of $21,042.73 within 30 days," it read. McMillan is a Lincoln therapist. She has long served a majority of patients who use Medicaid, the government-funded cheap or free insurance, to pay for mental health care. The letter came from an auditor working for one of three massive insurance companies the State of...

  • Doctor Chekhov, Physician & Writer

    Eric Holm|Dec 4, 2024

Literature classes worldwide study Anton Chekhov (1860-1904), a great innovator of the short story. He wrote closely observed and deeply empathic slices-of-life with a great sense of humor - but the Russian-Lit-class-version of Dr. Chekhov often overlooks the vitality of his work in the theater. Theater-people like me know him as a playwright, the creative counterpart to the acting teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky, who directed and starred in Chekhov's breakthrough play, The Seagull. Together...
