  • Isms: Views on Life in Rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Oct 12, 2023

For the past month, I’ve been sorting through photographs taken by our staff. I had an idea for a newspaper page, but it simply didn’t come together. I’ll save the idea - along with the photographs - for another time. What was I looking for? The truth, which can be seen in all snapshots. Photographer Lisette Model was a 1940s street photographer, best known for work defining human character. She was a pro at using reflection and levels to show and contrast a parallel universe at street level...

  • Making internet access more affordable for rural Nebraskans

Jillian Linster, Center for Rural Affairs|Oct 12, 2023

Infrastructure is often the first hurdle to high-speed internet access for rural Nebraskans, but it isn’t the last. Once the wires have been laid, residents still have to pay to use the service. Subscriber fees can vary widely, but they are frequently higher for communities and households in rural areas, where long stretches of fiber optic cable reach fewer access points relative to urban settings that have more people living within a smaller space. Greater lengths of cable means higher i...

  • The days dwindle down to a precious few

    JL Schmidt, Nebraska Press Association|Oct 12, 2023

"For it's a long, long while from May to December But the days grow short when you reach September And the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame..." -- September Song I decided it was time to get out of the office and go see Nebraska. It's been a post-pandemic while since I have done so. I jumped at the chance to ride to Chadron with a friend with numerous stops along the way. Call it a visual checkup to see how the Cornhusker State is holding up amid almost daily reports of increasing...

  • Next steps for the House of Representatives

    Rep. Adrian Smith|Oct 12, 2023

This week, the House was set to continue its work on the 12 annual appropriations bills to ensure the government is responsibly funded. Unfortunately, our legislative work to cut wasteful spending was disrupted when a small handful of Republicans voted with Democrats to remove the speaker of the House. I voted against vacating the chair because it sets a disruptive precedent and because the House should be focused on delivering results for the American people. House Republicans already have a...

However when these vessels become abnormally swollen or dilated, they are called varicose veins. This swelling is caused by the valves inside the veins becoming weak and no longer sealing tightly. Varicose veins can become painful, quite large and stick out from the surface of the skin. In order for blood to return from your feet back to...
