Getting a haircut is like turning the page of a well-worn book, where each snip of the scissors marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in the story of your life. If Larissa Thomson had followed one snip from a haircut, her chapter would have included nursing. "I always wanted to be a nurse," she said. She received a certified nursing assistant license and worked at an area care center during her senior year. Then, COVID-19 hit and she found herself balancing homework with long work shifts....
The double glass doors at Clearwater's Hi-Way Mart have seen a lot of traffic. Through flooding and severe weather, holidays and ordinary days, the convenience store, located at 303 Highway 275, has been a community mainstay. When owners Joe and Carol Thiele locked the doors for the final time on Aug. 31, it was bittersweet. For nearly 25 years, the Clearwater couple spent early morning hours opening the shop. Late-night hours were involved, too, keeping the "well-oiled machine" running on a...

According to Mike Podany, of Clarkson, the short-stature corn system looks at how to evaluate population while driving yield and managing green snap. "A lot of potential and a lot learning yet to go," Podany said. The Summerland test plot is owned by Bob Napier....

Oh, what a night! I've been at Memorial Stadium for some of the sweetest victories (and saddest defeats) in history. I was there in 1978 when the Huskers and Tom Osborne defeated Oklahoma. I've watched multiple Nebraska vs. Colorado games play out. I witnessed Ron Kellogg III throw a Hail Mary to the endzone and saw Jordan Westerkamp grab it out of thin air, securing a win. I sang "Let Me Clear My Throat" with 89,000 other Husker loyalists when they upset Michigan State. But, on a night when...
My son is a Boy Scout. Hopefully, he will become an Eagle Scout like his dad, his grandpa, his uncle, and not to mention 11 of the 12 men that walked on the moon. Whether he does or not, it has been an honor seeing the program help him and other boys mature into responsible young men. This summer, our troop took our canoes along the 108 miles on the Missouri River in Montana, in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. That stretch of the Missouri, where the river has carved impressive rock formations that create “breaks” in the lan...
Editor’s Note: This column was written and distributed prior to an Aug. 30 press conference regarding prison location. We’ve known for some time that the state wants to build a new prison because it has the most overcrowded corrections system in the country. It’s a given that state lawmakers agreed to spend at least $350 million on such a facility. A narrative change in recent months has shifted from “additional” space to a “replacement” for the existing Nebraska State Penitentiary, which has been in southwest Lincoln since the 1860s. The un...
