    LuAnnn Schindler, Publisher|Aug 14, 2024

Molly Aschoff spends a lot of her time listening. As the new superintendent of Summerland Public School, Aschoff believes listening is one way to hear what needs the system faces. It's a way to gauge essentials and plan for the future. "I'm hearing a lot," she said. "I think I'm still in that 100 days of listening, getting a grasp of what's going on in the building." Aschoff, who assumed the superintendent's position on July 1, said she's outlining goals for SPS, ranging from reinstating the...

  • Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnnn Schindler, Publisher|Aug 14, 2024

Au revoir, Paris. See you in 2028, Los Angeles. As the Olympics draw to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the competition storylines that captured my attention during the past two weeks. Who wouldn’t be inspired by Simone Biles and her redemption tour? After withdrawing from Olympic competition four years ago, due to injury, her journey to this year’s podium was inspiring. Not only is Biles one of the most-decorated Olympic gymnasts of all time, her actions on the sidelines show why she is simply the best. Her enthusiasm for her teammates shine...

  • And now for something completely different

Paul Hammel, Nebraska Press Association correspondent|Aug 14, 2024

As we all know, state legislators have been called back to Lincoln for a special session this summer to tackle the state's high property taxes. As has been written here before, good luck with that. It's easy to gripe about property taxes being too high; much more difficult to lower them without shifting the tax load onto someone else. But we need to talk about something that we also all gripe about – gasoline prices. I'm one of those guys who scans the countryside for the cheapest gas p...

  • Situated west of Lincoln, a little-known, cash-strapped university outpost spawns renowned work, serious awe

    Carson Vaughan, Flatwater Free Press|Aug 14, 2024

The year was 1974. It was early fall. Or was it late spring? Never mind all that, Gary Hergenrader says. It isn't the season he remembers today, but the site: the old campground across the water, a dozen red cabins clinging like ticks to the canyon walls, the lodge overlooking Keystone Lake, the geology exposed in the rocky shelves above. Before retiring in 2005, Hergenrader served nearly 25 years as the Nebraska state forester. But back in 1974, he was a 34-year-old professor at the University...

  • Online sports betting authority for Nebraska Legislature gets out of committee

    Aaron Sanderford, Nebraska Examiner|Aug 14, 2024

The Legislature’s General Affairs Committee took a half step Monday toward letting the public vote on the future of online sports betting in Nebraska. But the committee’s decision to punt a companion bill means any vote will likely wait until after the November election. The amended version of Legislative Resolution 3CA stopped short of letting voters decide the issue all at once. Instead, they would be asked to give the Legislature the constitutional authority to decide the issue. The amendment from State Sen. John Cavanaugh of Omaha, a Democr...

The patient makes IgE allergy antibody to the food. The cause of the reactions can be determined by the history and confirmed by allergy skin or blood testing. Once we know the allergenic food, a treatment plan can be put into...

    Aug 14, 2024

The potential for economic growth, job creation and additional tax revenue for rural communities continues to drive interest in renewable energy development across the country. But, as some decision makers are learning, there are other ways such projects can positively impact a community. Rural leaders in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota, for example, have negotiated Community Benefit Agreements to receive additional funding, scholarships and local donations. The project-specific agreements are negotiated between community groups and...
