  • Schacht experiences Africa's habitat during summer study program

    Erin Schwager, Journaist|Jul 7, 2022

This day and age, it is challenging for people to go "unplugged" to live life to the fullest. Holly Schacht, of Orchard, saw the challenge and met it head on. Schacht spent a month in South Africa on a study-abroad trip through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to gain experience for her fisheries and wildlife major and to fully live in the moment. "I've always wanted to study abroad, but after Covid hit halfway through my freshmen year and then into my sophomore year, there wasn't a...

According to Shaffer, the venture started when he was working on a project for his father-in-law. People started complimenting his work and asked if he could complete projects for them. Shaffer thought he would try a small business to see if he could eventually make it a full-time business, since he is still working a...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Jul 7, 2022

How much time do you dedicate each day to self-education or self-improvement? The question caught my attention while I read an article in “Business Insider.” According to the piece, 88% of rich people “devote 30 minutes more each day” to reading for the two above-mentioned reasons. Those findings are the result of a five-year study about daily habits of self-made millionaires, as reported by Tom Corley in “Change Your Habits Change Your Life.” Corley contends reading is a major success mag...

  • Three I's to build your hometown

Jeff Yost, President and CEO Nebraska Community Foundation|Jul 7, 2022

Imagination, innovation and invitation are three of the most important words in community building. These words hold great power in shaping hometowns in Greater Nebraska, today and in the future. For 20 years I've had the pleasure of working with community leaders throughout Holt County (population 10,127) in north central Nebraska. Amazing people live and work in Atkinson, O'Neill, Stuart and many other small towns in Holt County. It's always been a great place to be a kid. Today, Holt County...

Community solar is a way for residents to buy solar energy without needing to install panels on their home or business. Through the SunWise program, NPPD funds t...

  • Bring home memories, not ticks

    Andrew Ellsworth M.D.|Jul 7, 2022

Recently our family went on a camping trip. Our kids loved how we canoed our supplies across a lake and set up our campsite. My wife and I were reminded how much work it is. Soon our children were experiencing more mosquitos, flies, caterpillars and ticks than they had ever seen before. On one of our lovely hikes, nearly every time I looked down, I found another tick crawling on my shoe or leg. Ticks love tall grass, wooded areas and other moist and humid environments often close to the ground....

  • Temperature, weather conditions result in fish kill at area lake

    Jul 7, 2022

A fish kill at Pibel Lake in southern Wheeler County has affected a variety of sport fish and set back the size quality of fish in the popular fishing spot. Thousands of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish died June 21-22 in the 25-surface-acre lake south of Bartlett. High water temperature combined with a rapid die-off and decay of aquatic vegetation resulted in extremely low dissolved oxygen levels in the lake. The kill affected larger size fish in each species. A sampling conducted by the Nebraska Game and Parks...

  • Wonderful Watermelon

    Terri Hahn, Journalist|Jul 7, 2022

I’m not sure there is a food in the world that says “summer” more than watermelon. Although it’s early in the season, we eat it at Memorial Day cook-outs. The Fourth of July isn’t a proper celebration without this tasty treat. And we say good-bye to meteorological summer with a cold, crisp melon on Labor Day weekend. And don’t forget all those family reunions and backyard barbecues in between. For lots of reasons, I didn’t get to know my dad’s parents very well, but I do remember visiti...
