Cowboys and cowgirls attending the 56th annual Clearwater Big Rodeo will notice improvements on the rodeo grounds, situated along West Highway 275. A new 40-foot by 50-foot building, featuring a rodeo office, kitchen, meeting area, shop and shower, was approved by Clearwater Chamber of Commerce membership in December. Chamber vice president Jeremy Sanne said, "The building will benefit workers, especially for cleaning and keeping all supplies on the rodeo grounds." Many chamber members...
Two contestants will compete for the Miss Clearwater Rodeo title, this Friday, at the 56th edition of Clearwater's Big Rodeo. Queen contest chairman Devon Baum said contests will be judged in several areas, including personality, appearance and horsemanship. Luci Koinzan, of Neligh, and Felycia Kerkman, of Atkinson, will begin competition Friday, at 2 p.m., in the Gene Snodgrass Arena at the rodeo grounds. Contestants will compete in the horsemanship portion of the contest, which includes a...
In the musical "Oklahoma," one of the questions it tries to help answer is the age-old dilemma of whether or not the farmer and the cowman can be friends. In the song "The Farmer and the Cowman," the light-hearted melody and lyrics make the feud between the farmer and cowman seem silly, pointing out that "territory folks should stick together." Sunnnybrook Cafe sits close to, if not on, the intersection of farming and cowman territories in rural Nebraska. Its actual address is Ewing, but the...
The Summerland Advocate-Messenger, along with other newspapers across the state, will celebrate community journalism during the first-ever Community Newspaper Week, June 26 - 30. Gov. Jim Pillen made the proclamation in April, during Nebraska Press Association's annual get-together in Lincoln. Pillen's proclamation recognizes the historical record provided by newspapers, as well as a newspaper's responsibility to serve as a watchdog, promoting transparency and its role as an economic...
It’s amazing (and maybe a bit sad) how a simple conversation, or in this case, a Twitter post, can send you down a rabbit hole. That’s how I spent an hour, Sunday, after reading a friend’s post and the responses. His tweet - this week’s poll question below - is this: What is the best song that has Nebraska in either the title or lyrics? Many songs were familiar, but there were a few I needed to investigate. I compiled a brief list and listened to a few unfamiliar tunes. Scrolling through...
Wind, solar and other renewable energy projects offer a significant opportunity to revitalize rural communities and diversify the local economy. Increased tax revenue from renewable energy projects enables school districts, cities and other entities to address local emergency services and infrastructure improvement needs while reducing the local tax burden. Additionally, farmers and landowners can earn additional income through land-lease payments from project developers and new job...
So, this is prison reform? At this point, it's something and we'll cling to every little bit of it while the Republican majority anticipates the building of a new prison, which will do little, if anything, to alleviate overcrowding An omnibus bill sponsored by Omaha Sen. Justin Wayne and signed into law by Governor Jim Pillen creates several programs intended to improve the state's criminal justice system, including a program to expand problem-solving courts, a pilot program to establish parole-...
Marrying a farm kid has shown me the immense amount of pride in being part of the ag community. It is prevalent that the agricultural profession, while rewarding, is challenging. Running big dollar operations that are both physically and mentally demanding creates some serious strain on our mental health. Whether it's a co-op employee spraying chemicals or spreading fertilizer for 70+ hours a week or a farmer during planting or harvest, the demand never truly stops. In my practice, I talk a lot...
A cloud of confusion over who is responsible for a 1,670-foot portion of 516 Avenue, headed north out of Clearwater, hung over the village trustees’ June 12 meeting. Once the Sinclair dust settled, trustees agreed to take steps to clarify who is responsible for the road and establish a speed limit. Cole and Amy Scott, who reside at 205 River Road, addressed concerns with the amount of dust and the speed limit. According to village chairman Kelly Kerkman, a former village board member said permis...

AKRS has also been contacted to give m...
Seward County routinely seizes money from motorists on Interstate 80, keeps the cash – and never convicts the drivers of a crime. The county's sheriff's department and county attorney use this practice, known as civil asset forfeiture, so often that a third of all cases of this kind in Nebraska state courts come from Seward County, population 17,962, a Flatwater Free Press analysis of court records shows. The county has hauled in $7.5 million in forfeited cash in the past five years, some of i...
On Friday, June 16, the Tri-County Titans traveled to Creighton to take on Creighton/Plainview in junior legion baseball action. In a tight game until the final inning, Tri-County fell to Creighton/Plainview by a score of 0-8. Ryan Rifer took the mound for Tri-County, throwing four outstanding innings, according to Coach Jeff Shabram. Rifer allowed only two runs while striking out four batters. Due to pitch count rules, Wyatt Shabram came in for relief for Rifer, pitching the final two innings....
