  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|May 29, 2024

Baseball, hot dogs and apple pie are considered All-American staples. Should ranch dressing be added to the list? The condiment - oh, it’s more than a salad dressing - is an every-meal accessory for a couple of our grandkids. Drizzle it on pizza? Check. Add dry ranch seasoning to oyster crackers for “squeaky snacks,” as my kids call the treat? Absolutely. Dip chicken strips and fries in a dollop or twenty? All the dang time. Buy it by the gallon? Heck no, not in this house. (Dorothy, on the o...

  • Honoring those who served

    Sen. Deb Fischer|May 29, 2024

Memorial Day was born out of our nation’s most fractured and pivotal moment: the Civil War. Battered and worn after four years of internal strife, America nonetheless emerged intact in 1865, the dream of the Union preserved. The price of preserving our nation, our ideals, and our freedoms was approximately 620,000 American lives — nearly a quarter of a million more souls than our nation would give 80 years later to liberate Europe and defeat the Empire of Japan. In the aftermath of such ext...

Alberts was an All-American football player at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then eventually became athletic director at the school after a successful stint at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Seemed like a match made in heaven, and a job Alberts would hold for many years. But then, suddenly, it was over, and Alberts was trading Husker...

  • Out My Kitchen Window

    Bev Wieler|May 29, 2024

We've all heard it, April showers bring May flowers. For Nebraskans it's May showers that have helped kick in the May flowers and we hope this just continues. We sure don't want more storms. We've lucked out where I live that iris stems stand tall and the winds haven't caused any damage. Others haven't been so fortunate. I guess that is why when a flower bud opens, we better enjoy the show. I look out my kitchen window and realize what a blessing it is to be able to view the flowers. Not only...

  • Early intervention

    Joanie Holm RN CNP|May 29, 2024

It has been a few years since my children were babies. Having spent my youth as a babysitter and a career in pediatrics, I was pretty comfortable in watching the developmental of babies, toddlers and young children. (Teenagers are another story for another day.) That isn't always the case for young parents who may not have experience with this age group. Babies develop in a somewhat predictable fashion. As you think of a newborn, you might think of the poor neck control which changes drastically...

  • Henery defeats Brandt in Antelope County primary

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|May 29, 2024

Antelope County’s primary election resulted in only 1,080 ballots being cast. The structure of the party-line election, and lack of multiple candidates in many of the races, may have led to the low turnout. Only one county race took place, which was for the District 4 commissioner seat. Incumbent Charlie Henery advances to the general election after receiving 123 votes. Challenger Harlan Brandt, a former Antelope County supervisor, ended the night with 58 votes. President Joe Biden received 54 v...
