  • Know your value

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Jan 26, 2023

Mike Donahue understands pressure teenagers face. The Massachusetts native grew up "in a dysfunctional home" and internalized the pain and pressure he felt. Eventually, that led to a pattern of bullying, feeding his emotions with the devaluing of someone else. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force and as a youth pastor in Colorado, Donahue, who now lives in Omaha, visits schools across the world, sharing a message about knowing one's worth. Donahue addressed Summerland parents and patrons,...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Jan 26, 2023

Here’s a tip: Leave one. Or, don’t feel pressured to leave one. According to a recent Associated Press report, requests for tips are growing out of control. With digital payments trumping cash, customers are asked the following multiple choice question after making a purchase: 10%, 15%, 25% or custom amount. And the tipping prompt isn’t only at restaurants. Fast-food joints, convenience stores and clothing boutiques are urging customers to click to tip. I’ve seen several social media posts t...

  • Should we even consider a two-house Legislature?

    J.L. Schmidt, Statehouse Correspondent Nebraska Press Association|Jan 26, 2023

Every session of the Nebraska Legislature features what promises to be a real clunker of a bill. This year's prizewinner – so far – is a proposal to change from a unicameral to a two-house Legislature. Even the sponsor of the measure - LR2CA - admits that the proposed constitutional amendment probably won't get out of committee. Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard says it will be because of those "people living in the east." The Nebraska Republican Party included in its platform a plank calling for a "...

  • Not all that forgets is dementia

    Kelly Evans - Hullinger M.D.|Jan 26, 2023

Frequently, my patients will come to a visit and bring up a major concern: "Doc, I think I might have dementia; my memory seems to be slipping." They might give examples of having difficulty finding words, forgetting people's names or just feeling like their thinking is slower. Many of them know a family member who had dementia and they are worried. My first response is to hear their concerns; of course, if a patient is showing early signs of dementia, we want to assess that and do our best to g...

  • Outside my kitchen window

    Bev Wieler, Columnist|Jan 26, 2023

As I look out my kitchen window, I’m not only day dreaming in color for spring and summer, I’m also enjoying the fluffy capping of white as the recent snow covers the landscape. What a fun site as birds are fluttering around the bird feeders and winging their way to the bird bath. Mother Nature gave us this beautiful winter setting, although I know it also makes for a lot of extra work for farmers and road crews. My visions and dreams of color have been spurred by the seed catalogs that hav...

  • An aging breed: Nebraska's farmers are getting older. Who will replace them?

    Lori Potter, Flatwater Free Press|Jan 26, 2023

As Justin Taubenheim combined soybeans in a Buffalo County field on an October afternoon, he thought about why he does it. "I'm not farming to get rich,” he said. “I'm farming to maintain a legacy, a way of life. Faith, family and farming, in that order. The farm is kinda like the icing on the cake." Taubenheim, 31, sports fewer gray hairs than your normal Nebraska farmer. The average age of a principal Nebraska farm or ranch operator: 56.4 years old, according to census figures. The rising worry: There won’t be a next generation to carry...
