Brenna Wagner steps to the line, dribbles three times, spins the ball, letting it bounce on the floor before catching it, takes aim and sends an arching shot to the basket. Swoosh. Piece of cake. The Summerland senior's free throw, taken against St. Mary's, Jan. 14, cemented Wagner's name in the school's basketball history books, giving her 1,000 career points. If I asked you to name four movies that define your teenage years, what would be your response? In the past two weeks, I’ve seen social media posts asking individuals to select four films they identify with from their teen years. Naming four would be a snap if I grew up in the 1980s ... “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Karate Kid,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Those ‘80s comedies celebrated teen angst at its best and provided comic relief. Movies from my era, a decade prior, ran t...

  • Remarks from Mark

    Mark Mahoney, Journalist|Jan 21, 2021

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. That's how I view the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-17 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, that sent my favorite pro football team on to the next round of the playoffs. Going into the game, I thought the Chiefs were going to win, of course, but not with backup quarterback Chad Henne finishing off the victory. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City's starting quarterback, was knocked out of the contest in the third quarter with an injury, which was reportedly a...

  • Briese introduces constitutional amendment for education funding

    Jan 21, 2021

Senator Tom Briese, a long-time proponent of property tax relief in the Nebraska Legislature, introduced LR21 CA last week. LR21 CA would require the state to fund all K-12 classroom expenses. In introducing it, Briese said, “For far too long, the State of Nebraska has shirked its obligation to provide for the free education of its students. Instead, the state has continually chosen to pass on the bulk of the cost of public education to its property taxpayers. In fact, Nebraska is nearly last in the country in the percentage of K-12 education f...

  • Speechsters begin season with seventh-place finish

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Jan 21, 2021

Instead of competing at Wisner-Pilger Public School, speakers performed virtually via Zoom, at the Ewing site, in W-P's annual Practice Makes Perfekt meet....

  • Let them eat cake

    Terri Hahn, Journalist|Jan 21, 2021

I have no idea who invented chocolate cake, but I'm sure glad they did! Cake itself makes life better, but whoever decided to make it with chocolate deserves some kind of honor. In poking around online, I found several polls that found chocolate tops the list of favorite cake flavors. I'm not surprised. Aside from one former coworker who wouldn't eat anything made with chocolate (what's up with that?), I don't know anyone who doesn't like chocolate and very few people who don't like cake....
