North Central District Health Department board of health members learned two things Friday about personal protective equipment storage at the O’Neill Armory, during Friday’s monthly meeting in O’Neill. NCDHD interim director Liz Parks said efforts to dispense surplus PPE, including gowns and masks, had been exhausted. At the board’s Sept. 29 meeting, Danielle Roessler, emergency response coordinator, said she had contacted multiple schools and agencies about potential use of some of the PPE, in...
In middle school, my favorite shoes were Chucks. I had three pairs: red, white and black. They were comfy. And, honestly, I didn’t care what shoes I wore. I wasn’t trying to make a fashion statement. That changed by the time I was a sophomore. I still owned several sets of Chucks, but the fashionista gene was kicking in and platform shoes and Mary Janes were preferred footwear. Through the years, I grew to like tennis shoes less and less, owning a single pair that would last for years. Ins...

A straw poll taken during a Sunday evening meeting showed a majority of the audience favored construction of a community center in Clearwater. More than 50 residents attended the meeting, held at the American Legion and led by Sons of Clearwater members Kelly Kerkman and Bill Thiele. According to Kerkman, Sons of Clearwater is “a spinoff of the Sons of the Legion” when the former hardware store was acquired and eventually, the Clearwater Cafe property. Thiele said the current American Leg...
An application for active law enforcement officers, dedicated to reduce law enforcement response time to active school shooting incidents, was a topic of discussion during public participation at the Oct. 17 Summerland Board of Education meeting. Board president Ed Nordby presented the Hero911 app to the board more than a year ago. "I think it's a really good thing the school should look into," Nordby said. Summerland patron Daniel Parker, who works as a Nebraska State Patrol investigator, said...
Random thoughts on a Monday (and Tuesday): • Ego tries to mask itself with confidence and, usually, comes up short. Isn’t it better to show your real self and admit failures and be gracious when you find success? • Procrastination is a fickle friend. She keeps promising to assist with a few projects and then she pulls me aside and commands all my attention elsewhere. • I should have meal prepped today’s lunch. A German chocolate cupcake doesn’t contain a lot of nutritional value, even if it has c...

Michael Koenig finished three for three, for four yards. Kendrick Schroeder led the Bobcat rushing attack, running 113 yards on 17 carries. Trevor Thomson added 83 yards on the ground....

Dialogue between Antelope County Commissioners and members of the Antelope County Patriot group became contentious, at times, during the Oct. 11 commissioners’ meeting in Neligh. Prior to the Patriots’ presentation, county attorney Joe Abler suggested the board enter executive session to review a letter from Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, regarding clarification of terms in the state’s election statutes. Following executive session, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, audie...
It’s a case that could be ripped from the headlines. Teenager Bill E. Kid is accused of drinking at a party and starting hay bales on fire at McDonald’s farm. Will the jury believe the standout athlete? Or, will justice prevail for farmer who lost everything? Students from Antelope County high schools conducted the mock trial during County Government Day, held Oct. 6 at the courthouse. In addition to the trial, students met elected county officials, toured the law enforcement center and att...
Talk about sticker shock. Imagine my surprise a few days ago as I grabbed a carton of eggs from the cold case at the local store: $7.45 for a dozen large eggs. Usually, grandson Jorden supplies eggs, fresh from the poultry pen, but his supply was depleted. Needless to say, I changed my menu plan and returned the carton to the shelf. Accordng to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index has seen an 8.2% increase in the last year. Electricity prices shock a lot of us, with a...

Ewing village trustees faced a light agenda during Monday evening’s meeting at city hall. Village clerk Sharon Swails presented a proposed fee schedule to trustees, based on information from the Nebraska Rural Water Association. She told trustees she has questions about the suggested rates and will need to speak to Randy Hellbusch from NERWA before trustees approve the rates. “We’ve been playing phone tag,” Swails said. Rates will be addressed next month, since an ordinance needs to approve...
A windbreak, of sorts, will eventually provide shade and protection along the west service driveway at Summerland Public Schools. On Oct. 5, elementary students planted 10 trees received from the Ten Free Trees program through the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. James Ramold, of Ewing, applied for the grant, which stipulates trees must be planted on public property and “provide clear public benefit.” Great Plains Nursery, of Weston, delivered trees to the site. Ele...
Want to relive part of your childhood? Here’s your chance. Head to McDonald’s by Oct. 30 and grab an adult meal box. Interesting question our office has received on more than one occasion: Why does SAM sometimes run articles from other areas of Nebraska? The answer is relatively simple. We are Nebraska. I like to think our readers want to learn more about this place we call home. When we share articles from Flatwater Free Press or Nebraska Examiner or Nebraska News Service, our goal is to offer coverage that is not only interesting, but may have an impact on our lives. For example, on Page 3 in this week’s edi...
