Clearwater residents will get a sneak peek of what the village’s business district could resemble during a Nov. 8 open house, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Clearwater American Legion. Five Rule Rural Planning founder Bobbi Pettit, planner Lowell Schroeder and members of its design team will unveil concepts for buildings and infrascture along the village’s Main Street. The "Advocate-Messenger" will feature a veterans' tribute in the Nov. 9 edition. Individuals who wish to honor a veteran are asked to send the veteran's name, branch of service, service dates and photo to [email protected] or drop off the form on Page 4 and a photo at the office, 522 Main Street, in Clearwater. Veterans who have been featured in past years will be included. During the summer, SAM staff worked with the Clearwater American Legion to get photos and information...
Students enrolled in government classes at Summerland Public School will present a Veterans Day program, Friday, Nov. 10, at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Instructor Dan Roeber said students are comparing all wars. "We have a general overview of each war to include the stats and figures of countries involved. We will also look at the overview of the homefront, the sacrifices made and the treatment of soldiers as the attitude of war changed," Roeber said....
Isn’t it amazing how a game changes over the years? During the late 1960s, Mom coached volleyball in Clay Center. I remember sitting on the stage in what later became known as the “old gym,” watching her toss the ball to the girls, running some kind of hitting drill. I can see a line of girls practicing their underhanded serves, some of the balls skimming over the top of the net and landing in the back corner of the court. I vaguely remember a few games taking place against area schools. There...
Sam Cheatum scored four touchdowns, in Friday's Class D1 football playoff game against Stanton, but it wasn't enough to defeat the unbeaten Mustangs. Stanton claimed a 60-30 win to advance to the field of eight teams in the 2023 NSAA State Football Championships bracket. Coach TomThramer said he thought the team competed well against Stanton. "We obviously didn't win the game, but we stuck in it until the final whistle which I am proud of our kids for. We aren't quite at the level of Stanton in...
The Summerland Bobcats came out swinging, Saturday, when they met undefeated Bayard in the Class C2 district final, in Brady. Those swings led to 32 team kills, five ace serves and a three-set sweep over the Tigers. Bayard jumped to an early lead in set one, but the Bobcats remained calm and collected, narrowing the Tigers' lead, point by point. With the match tied at 24, Ady Mlnarik stepped up to the service line and sent a rocket across the net. The volley ended with a Lydia Robertson block....
A popular northeast Nebraska tourist spot received recognition last week during the annual Nebraska Tourism Conference held in Gering. Ashfall Fossil Bed State Historical Park, located northwest of Royal, was named the recipient of the Nebraska Passport Champion's Choice Award. The award was presented during the Celebrate Nebraska Awards Banquet, Oct. 19, in Gering. Individuals who took part in the 2023 Nebraska Passport program voted for their favorite place included in the passport. This...
While neighboring state's officials wait to make decisions on permits for a proposed carbon-capture pipeline, Antelope County Planning and Zoning Commission members voted 6-1 to approve a conditional use permit for Summit Carbon Solutions. Bob Krutz cast the lone vote to deny the permit when the commission reconvened, Oct. 12. A public hearing for the CUP was originally held Sept. 14. During discussion after the hearing, commission members voted to continue the meeting to Oct. 5. At that...
County weed superintendent Bill Babutzke presented his department’s quarterly report when Holt County Supervisors met in regular session, Oct. 16. As of that date, 138 inspections had taken place. Eight different properties were still in the process of being sprayed. “Hopefully we don’t have to do a forced spray,” Babutzke said. The cost for weed department employees to spray township roads was set at $200 per hour, plus the chemical. Additionally, a $1.70 per mile charge, one way, will be incl...
Summerland School officials have until Nov. 30 to declare if the Bobcat football team will play in the eight-man division during the next two-year cycle. During the Oct. 16 board of education meeting, activities director Zach Rosenboom said the current enrollment shows 63 male students in grades nine, ten and eleven. "The cutoff (for eight-man) is 47," he said. Rosenboom said a one-cycle waiver is available, which makes the Bobcats eligible for post-season play. Board member Nate Schwager asked...
“Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story.” I read this quote, by author Mason Cooley, recently and it made me think about Halloween traditions and costumes from my childhood and ones my kids wore. Mom loved Halloween. She’d decorate our house with pumpkins and black cats and ghosts. Then, on Oct. 31, she’d create a tablescape by the front door, with a kitschy orange plastic pumpkin overflowing with candy, black taper candles and a notebook with parchment paper, so trick-o...
Gavin Whiting recovered a Hi-Line fumble, in overtime, to secure Summerland's 52-46 win over the Bulls, Thursday, in the opening round of Class D1 state football playoffs. Leading up to the moment, the game, played in Eustis, resembled a foot race between Hi-Line's senior quarterback Ryker Evans and Summerland's rushing corps, which ended the game with five players hitting double digits. "Last Thursday, our guys showed great resilience in the second half," said Bobcat coach Tom Thramer. He said...
Bobcat football fans will have only one chance to watch Summerland take on the Hi-Line Bulls, Thursday, in the first round of the 2023 NSAA Class D1 State Football Playoffs and that opportunity will be in person. "The game won't be live-streamed, due to connectivity issues in Eustis," said Zach Rosenboom, Bobcat athletic director. Fans will be able to tune in to KAMI, 100.1FM, via the internet at ruralradio.com. Pregame coverage is slated to begin at 2:35 p.m., with kickoff set for 3 p.m....
A group of Ewing residents strolled down memory lane, Saturday, during the Sunset Banquet. The longtime Ewing tradition celebrates those who are young at heart, ages 70-plus. This year, the banquet donned a retro look, with music, games, foods and TV trivia from the decade that introduced Hamburger Helper and made David Cassidy a household name. The annual get-together began in 1917, when the Methodist Episcopal Ladies Aid began honoring elder members of the community, and continued for 100 year...
Village of Clearwater officials spent part of the Oct. 9 meeting discussing the state of River Road and Nebraska Street. Kelly Kerkman gave an update from discussion about the two stretches of road with Antelope County Commissioners, including a clerical error on annexation of the Nebraska Street. “When they tore it up, it was still theirs,” Kerkman said. “I know both roads need to be done and we’ve got streets that need to be done, so I don’t know how to approach it.” Trustee Cody Kester said c...
December. That’s when the village of Ewing anticipates the arrival of a new payloader. Village maintenance supervisor Alan Potter told trustees he spoke with a company representative regarding delivery. Trustees signed a letter of conditions, as well as a grant agreement, for a $58,000 matching grant from the USDA. Trustee Dustin Wright asked what plans are for the current payloader. Trustee Kane Fry suggested accepting sealed bids. “There’s quite a few people who want to get their hands on it...
I made two confessions this weekend to friends from long ago. We reconnected Saturday at the Northeast Nebraska Motorsports Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Norfolk. I serve as secretary on the board of directors, thanks to longtime family friend Troy Weyhrich, whose dad, Don, drove the unforgettable $1.98 modified. Don hailed from the Wausa area, as did my dad. Summer months were spent at the racetrack when I was young: Friday nights in Hastings, Saturdays at Mid-Continent Raceway and...
"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories." You could almost hear the most famous two lines from TV's crime drama "Law and Order" before the case of Bill E. Kid began, Oct. 5, at the Antelope County Courthouse. The mock trial is a yearly tradition during County Government Day. Kid is accused of drinking at a party...
Holt County Sheriff’s department responded to a two-vehicle accident, Sunday, Oct. 8, about 2.25 miles east of O’Neill on Hwy 20/275. Deputy Steven Binkerd reported a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Michael Klabenes, 37, of O’Neill, slowed to turn into a driveway as he traveled east. Klabenes stopped to let a westbound vehicle pass before turning, when a 2012 Chevy Silverado, driven by Dylan Olson, 29, of Wisner, was unable to stop when his vehicle’s brakes failed. Neither occupant was wea...
Last week, the Bobcat volleyball team picked two impressive wins. On Oct. 10, Summerland traveled to Wayne and, after dropping set one, rebounded to win the match. Ady Mlnarik led the way, nailing 16 kills. Lydia Robertson added a baker's dozen. Bailey Ahlers ended with three blocks and Preslie Robertson dug the ball 28 times. On Friday, the Bobcats visited St. Mary's and won a hard-fought match in five. Mlnarik landed 21 kills, hitting .242%. Sarah Wiese sent three blocks to the other side....
Neither wind nor a chilling rain could keep the Bobcats from finding the opposing team's end zone, Friday afternoon, as Summerland dominated North Central, 42-14. It was a one-two-three punch from Michael Koenig, who completed eight of nine passes for 199 yards, Alec Schindler, who rushed for 140 yards, and Sam Cheatum's 107-yard day in the receiving corps, that did in the Knights. The Bobcats struck first on a 40-yard pass play from Koenig to Schindler and continued with Koenig and Cheatum...
If you closed your eyes Saturday, during the inaugural Northeast Nebraska Motorsports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, you could almost hear motors revving as cars drifted into the bank of turn three before heading for the the finish line. A group of northeast Nebraska legends received the ultimate checked flag in front of a crowd of nearly 300, gathered at the Norfolk VFW, to honor the 2022 and 2023 NENMHOF classes. The organization formed in 2022 and set the pace by selecting the first two...
Whether or not Antelope County Planning and Zoning Commission approves a conditional use permit for a proposed carbon-capture pipeline will wait until Thursday, at the earliest. The group is set to reconvene, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m., in the commissioners' meeting room, to discuss approval or to deny the permit. Public comment will not be heard since that portion of the process closed when the commission met Sept. 14. Chairman Greg Wortman said he had been contacted by a member of the public who...
Two separate incidents of vandalism occured at the Summerland Advocate-Messenger office recently. The first incident, which occurred Sept. 22, ended with a broken ceramic flower pot and an American flag, on a pole, snapped from a bracket on the building. The second incident occurred between Sept. 28 and Oct. 1. A second flower pot was moved to another location, flowers removed and the pot broken. A reward is being offered for information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrator(s)....
For the past month, I’ve been sorting through photographs taken by our staff. I had an idea for a newspaper page, but it simply didn’t come together. I’ll save the idea - along with the photographs - for another time. What was I looking for? The truth, which can be seen in all snapshots. Photographer Lisette Model was a 1940s street photographer, best known for work defining human character. She was a pro at using reflection and levels to show and contrast a parallel universe at street level...
